Have you ever wondered what to do on the Monday after leaving church on Sunday? What about Tuesday, and for the rest of the week?
You return to your regular routine, and before long, the bliss of Sunday begins to fade. Many believers find it difficult to live out their faith beyond the church walls on Sundays. For some, it’s simply more comfortable that way.
Religion can easily become a routine—it lets us live how we want Monday through Saturday, dress up on Sunday, and check off that we went to church.
But I want to challenge us, just as the Word of God does, to let our faith live between Sundays—through what I call Everyday Grace.
The name "Everyday Grace" was inspired by a devotional I completed on Psalm 119—the longest chapter in the Bible with 176 verses. I’ll be honest: I didn’t read all 176. I came across verse 105, and I stopped. I couldn’t move past it. I read it over and over, trying to see why this familiar verse stood out.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105 (CSB)
It’s a verse I’d heard since childhood—a verse often quoted in prayers and devotionals. But that day, the Holy Spirit made it come alive in a new way for me.
Whether you’re new to the faith or seasoned in it, we know that God rarely shows us the whole picture at once. He doesn’t reveal every step of the staircase—only the next one.
As we walk with Him, things begin to unfold, piece by piece, and His purpose becomes clear in His timing.
I want to focus on this simple item—a lamp.
I love lamps. I have one in my work office, one in my bedroom, and sconces in my living areas. I like a calm, cozy atmosphere, so I usually use a lamp instead of bright overhead lights.
A lamp only illuminates what’s nearby. It symbolizes closeness—personal guidance and intimacy. In this case on a path, enough for the next step.
When I turn on a lamp in my room, I can’t see clearly down the hallway unless I turn on the main light. A lamp gives direction for where you are; a light shines where you’re going.
“Your word is…”
God’s Word—whether spoken or written, promise or instruction—isn’t just information; it’s illumination for life.
His Word guides us, directs us, and gives us discernment for the steps we must take daily.
It’s a lamp to our feet—showing us how to walk by faith in the present moment—and a light to our path, revealing the way forward in the future.
"A lamp gives direction for where you are; a light shines where you’re going."
One of the biggest practical shifts happened in my life when I meditated on this verse. As believers, we often seek God for the big things--our long-term plans, our major life decisions, and we quote Proverbs 3:5-6 often. This is great, as we should; however, we should also let the Word of God shape our attitudes daily. We sometimes overlook letting His Word be the lamp for the little things. Today, ask God:
How can Your Word shape my attitude today?
How can I live out Sunday's sermon on Monday and throughout the week?
How can I serve those around me?
"Faith isn't meant to be confined to a day--it's meant to illuminate every day."
A lamp. A light. Everyday Grace.
Father, thank You for being the light that guides our steps. Help us not to rush ahead or walk in our own understanding, but to trust the gentle glow of Your Word each day. Teach us to find Your grace in the ordinary moments— in our work, thoughts, and conversations.
Let our faith shine beyond Sunday, and may Your word that is a lamp for our feet, a light for our path, always lead us closer to You, each day.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
